God of War: Classic Trilogy Remake and New Retro Game Arrives Today!

Sony surprises fans with the announcement of the remastering of the original God of War trilogy (PS2/PS3), still in early development. This revisiting of the classics makes sense after the success of the Norse games and the upcoming Amazon series. Additionally, a new game, God of War Sons of Sparta, inspired by classic 2D titles and canonical, is already available for $30, offering a fun retro alternative while we await Kratos' return.

God of War: Classic Trilogy Remake and New Retro Game Arrives Today!

TL;DR: Sony announced the remastering of the original God of War trilogy, and a new game inspired by classic 2D titles is now available for franchise fans.

Surprise Announcement for God of War Fans

Last year, we celebrated 20 years since the launch of God of War on PlayStation 2, which kicked off one of the biggest gaming franchises. Now, at the end of this 20th-anniversary celebration, Sony's Santa Monica Studio has announced two new projects.

First, and most significantly, the original God of War trilogy from PS2 and PS3 is being remastered for the modern era.

There's no game footage yet — the developer says they are "very early in development," so we probably won't see or hear much about it for a while. But given the renewed interest in God of War thanks to the excellent Norse games of 2018 and 2022 (not to mention the upcoming Amazon series), it makes sense to revisit these classics.

Details of the Original Trilogy

  • God of War and God of War II were released for PlayStation 2 in 2005 and 2007, respectively
  • The third game in the Greek trilogy arrived on PlayStation 3 in 2010
  • The third game was also remastered for PS4
  • It's safe to say that while the first two games are classics of their time, they also show their age in some aspects of gameplay

Who else has nightmares about the Hades level at the end of the first game? It's not just me, right?

Sons of Sparta: The New Game Available Now

While we won't see the remasters for a while, there's a new God of War-inspired game available now: God of War Sons of Sparta.

Developed by Mega Cat Studios, a studio known for its love of retro games — they even release games for SNES and Genesis.

Given their history, it's no surprise that Sons of Sparta has the atmosphere of classic 2D action/platformer games. Apparently, it is canonical to the series and takes place in Kratos' youth as he trains with his brother. It's obvious that it doesn't look anything like the other God of War games — but the combat and monsters shown in the trailer definitely fit well with the series.

Availability and Price

Perhaps the most fun part of it all is that it's available today for $30. While Sons of Sparta seems like a fun curiosity for God of War fans, it only goes so far to satisfy our appetite for this series of remasters. How about a visit to Valhalla while we wait?

Takeaway: The announcement of the original God of War trilogy remaster is exciting news for franchise fans, especially with the recent success of the Norse games. While we await this ambitious project, Sons of Sparta offers a fun, retro alternative that helps keep the flame alive until the more modern Kratos returns to screens.
